The interesting thing about the subway is that you are never alone. Everyone pretends to be alone, but you aren't. Sometimes you get to see really wonderful moments.
Yesterday there was a girl who was about 14 or so on the train with her mom. The girl was all decked out in her winter white finery. Poofy down vest, timberland boots and all. The mom was in what looked to me like nice work clothes: loafers, tailored trousers, nice jacket and scarf. You wouldn't have guessed they were together. The only reason you knew they were was a set of ipod earphones. One bud was in the girl's ear, the other was in her mom's. They were both grooving to some unknown song, smiling, and laughing together. The mom was standing and bobbing her head; the girl was sitting. At the end of the song, the mom gave the daughter back the ear bud, and they smiled and talked a bit about the song. Then the train stopped at their stop and they were off. I wouldn't know them if I ever saw them again, but they made my Sunday.

so tender. I am quite curious as to what song such a duo would both listen and groove to together? Something from the Mom's youth, or something current the Mom is learning to appreciate.
